What makes gith names unique?

Gith birth names and their meaning come from their native language. They are rarely longer than three syllables and sometimes use a similar apostrophized structure to elven and drow names. Though it is rare, some gith may take a last or familial name as a formality when interacting with other races. However, most use only a singular first name.

What are gith?

Gith are tall and emaciated-looking humanoids with pale skin that appears yellow, green, or brownish in tone. They have long heads with angular faces, deep-set eyes, flattened noses, and pointed ears. Their hair is often dark and includes colors like black, red, russet, and sometimes grey.

Some sages claim that Gith descended from humans long ago. However, their exact history remains a mystery due to the countless generations their kind spent subservient to the mind flayers. After breaking free from their enslavement, philosophical differences led to a cultural divide. This internal conflict created two gith groups at constant odds, the githyanki and the githzerai.

Some see the gith’s story as a cruel twist of fate. Inspired by their leader and namesake, the gith rose to overthrow the mind flayers who held them in servitude. However, after gaining their freedom, the two factions of githyanki and githzerai disagreed on what type of civilization they would create. Their disagreement grew from open hostility to civil war, forever dividing a people once united against a singular cause.

Motivated by revenge, the githyanki believe their centuries of suffering entitle them to whatever they want from the world around them. Taking refuge in the titanic city of Tu’narath on the Astral Plane, they send raiding parties to pillage other worlds like the Material Plane, often returning with countless treasures and unfortunate slaves. They also continue to hunt and kill mind flayers mercilessly as revenge for what they endured at the hands of the illithids.

The githzerai believe they can obtain an enlightened society by leaving behind the violence and enslavement they once endured. However, while peaceful, githzerai share much of the same hatred for mind flayers and rarely shy away from a necessary battle. It is not unusual for them to send squads to destroy illithid outposts from time to time.

Where do gith live?

After gaining freedom from the oppressors who enslaved their kind, the gith sought to establish a new nation by leveling the mind flayer empire. Before reaching this goal, two contrary gith factions emerged and began a violent civil war, the rebellious githzerai and the current leadership, who would later call themselves the githyanki.

After losing their leader Zerthimon, the githzerai retreated to the Outer plane of Limbo. At the same time, the surviving githyanki settled among the former, now-abandoned illithid settlements in the Astral Plane. And while their internal struggle continued, the surviving mind flayers escaped and withdrew to underground citadels. Their numbers reduced, the gith and mind flayers alike continue to regroup and gather their strength. Each side plots against the other in hopes of furthering their goals and expanding their realm.
