Do you need a mount?
Traveling the lands of Faerûn can be taxing, especially without the assistance of a mount to carry the loot you refused to leave behind. Whether you are looking for a horse, camel, or even an elephant, a stable can be the most reliable place to find your next loyal carrying companion. Not all equine establishments are created equal, and not all towns may have the resources or need for such a building. However, if you are lucky enough to happen upon a well-maintained stable, you may be surprised at what may await you inside.
Beyond the previously mentioned beasts of burden, a stable can provide other animals as well. Mules, mastiffs, ponies, and warhorses are common, and each has a unique speed, carrying capacity, and cost. Exotic or rare animals may also be available depending on your location and the flexibility of your game master. If you find yourselves in need of a way to traverse the misty skyward realm of the cloud giants, a nearby metropolis may provide flying mounts like pegasi, griffons, and hippogriffs. Similarly, a coastal city might have just what you need to traverse the briny deep, like a giant sea horse or reef shark.
What else does a stable sell?
Like owning a pet in real life, your newly made friend will also require care and outfitting. Though it can be expensive, a stable can help provide you with many different helpful items. They may not stock everything you’re looking for, but some of the options made available to you may include feed, shoes, saddles, bridles, blankets, bags, reins, harnesses, and sometimes even various wagons. What you need will depend on your unique adventure, and what you pay may rely on a carefully rolled charisma check.
Certain stables may also provide boarding or livery services for a small fee. This service would allow you to have your beast fed and cared for while you are away. Some livery yards may even inquire whether or not you would like your new mount to be let out for hire. Allowing the stable to use your companion in this way could be a great way to make a bit of money on the side while you and your party members head out to continue your adventure. Just be sure you can trust the treatment of your faithful friend.
Once you’ve taken the time to carefully select the creature that best suits you, and purchase all that they need to help you on your quest, don’t forget to choose a name that best suits them.
